Position Overview
XGS Energy, a next-generation geothermal energy company, is hiring its first VP, Projects to serve as the most senior leader in the project delivery organization. As XGS advances a multi-gigawatt project pipeline, the company needs someone who can simultaneously execute on live, large-scale capital projects and stand up the organization, governance, and systems required to deliver as the company grows.
The role owns two things: project delivery (the people and process that get projects from FID through construction and commissioning) and project controls & management systems (the cost, schedule, risk, reporting discipline, and supporting tools that build confidence in how projects are run). Given the nature of XGS’s technology, all projects have surface and subsurface scope, and experience in both domains is central to this role.
Beyond execution of current U.S. projects, this leader will be a key strategic voice in shaping XGS’s international development portfolio, evaluating new geographies, technical feasibility, partnership structures, and entry strategy for future geothermal projects abroad. This role reports directly to executive leadership and will be instrumental in building the project delivery function as the company scales.
Responsibilities
- Project Delivery Leadership
- Serve as the senior executive accountable for the successful delivery of XGS’s capital projects, from pre-FID concept selection through detailed design/engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover to operations
- Own overall project delivery strategy: contracting and execution models (EPC, EPCM, multi-contract), owner’s-engineer approach, and the balance of in-house vs. outsourced delivery capability
- Provide direct oversight and escalation support on the company’s most complex or highest-value projects, including those with integrated surface (power plant, gathering, interconnection) and subsurface (well construction, drilling, completions) scope
- Represent project delivery to the executive team and board, providing clear, credible reporting on progress, risk, and forecast across the portfolio
- Project Controls & Management Systems
- Build and lead the project controls function: cost engineering, scheduling, estimating, change management, risk management, and progress/earned-value reporting
- Define and implement the project management system, governance framework, and stage-gate process the company will use to sanction, execute, and close out projects consistently
- Select and implement the toolset (scheduling, cost control, document control, risk register, reporting/dashboarding) appropriate for a multi-project portfolio, with an eye to what the organization will need as it scales
- Establish consistent estimating and benchmarking practices so that cost and schedule performance can be tracked and improved project over project
- Organization Building
- Design and build out the project delivery and project controls organization: define roles, hire and develop the team, and establish how the function scales
- Set the operating rhythm, reporting cadence, and decision-making forums (project reviews, gate reviews, risk reviews) for the delivery organization
- Build a culture of accountability, technical rigor, and safety across the project team, and act as a mentor and technical authority for project managers and engineers
- Client, Partner & Stakeholder Management
- Act as the senior project relationship owner with strategic suppliers (EPCs, drilling contractors, OEMs), bringing contractor-side experience to bear on how the company structures and manages those relationships from the owner’s side
- Support permitting, regulatory, and community engagement processes as they intersect with project execution planning
- Represent XGS in engagements with strategic customers, business development partners and financing counter parties, as requested by the management team
- Commercial & Risk Management
- Own project-level risk identification, mitigation planning, and contingency management across cost, schedule, technical, and execution risk
- Support contract strategy and negotiation for major project agreements, drawing on experience on both the client and contractor sides of large energy capital projects
- Provide project economics input (capex forecasting, cost-to-complete, schedule-driven revenue impacts) to support financing and investor reporting
- Portfolio & International Development
- Provide substantial technical and commercial input into the evaluation of a pipeline of international geothermal development opportunities, including project feasibility assessment, regulatory and permitting considerations, and local contracting/labor market dynamics
- Advise executive leadership and business development on project-related risks and opportunities as XGS evaluates new markets, partnerships, and project structures internationally
- Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement
- Represent the projects function to executive leadership, the board, investors, and external partners as needed
- Partner cross-functionally with geoscience, engineering, HSE, supply chain, and finance
- Build relationships with regulators, landowners, and local communities as required to support project execution
Required Qualifications
- 20+ years of progressive experience leading large-scale capital projects in the energy sector (power generation, oil & gas, geothermal, LNG, renewables, or comparable heavy industrial/infrastructure projects)
- A track record of experience on both the owner/client side and the contractor/EPC side of major capital projects
- Direct experience on projects with both surface and subsurface scope (e.g., upstream oil & gas, geothermal, mining, or similar), with credibility in both domains
- Demonstrated experience building or significantly scaling a project controls function, including selecting and implementing project management systems and toolsets
- Experience building and leading a project delivery organization, including hiring, structuring, and developing teams
- Strong track record managing project cost, schedule, and risk on projects in the tens to hundreds of millions of dollars, or larger
- Executive-level communication skills, with experience reporting to a CEO/board and engaging directly with investors, partners, or lenders on project matters
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a high-growth or startup environment, where processes and organizations are being built in parallel with active project execution
- Familiarity with geothermal drilling or subsurface well construction specifically
- Experience with corporate power offtake structures (e.g., data center or large corporate PPAs) and the project execution implications of those deals
- PMP, PMI-SP, or equivalent project management credential; engineering degree (petroleum, mechanical, civil, or related) or equivalent experience
What XGS Offers:
- The opportunity to build and lead the project delivery function of a company at the center of the next-generation geothermal industry, with a multi-gigawatt project pipeline and marquee partners
- A senior, high-visibility executive seat reporting into the executive team, with real influence over how the company scales its project organization
- Competitive base salary, substantial equity, and competitive benefits
- 25%+ travel, relocation support if needed
