Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Integrated Thermal Field & Development Modeler to lead the connection between subsurface heat flow systems and full field development design for geothermal energy production. This role is responsible for translating geoscience and thermal models into field development strategies, including well (s) model, multi-well pad configuration, and system-wide thermal energy extraction optimization. The candidate will bridge subsurface heat extraction behavior with surface power plant operations to maximize long-term thermal output and field efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Thermal System Modeling & Simulation
- Develop and maintain geoscience and thermal models representing subsurface heat distribution and rock properties.
- Convert thermal models into predictive heat extraction and performance models.
- Simulate heat long term heat extraction behavior, recharge scenarios.
- Continuously refine models using temperature log, laboratory test, and well production data.
- Field Development Design
- Design geothermal field development concepts including:
- Well count optimization based on heat recovery potential
- Well spacing and thermal interference management
- Optimal well depth and targeting of high-potential resource zones
- Multi-well pad architecture (e.g., 4-10+ wells per pad)
- Develop staged field expansion plans aligned with power delivery targets.
- Optimize long-term thermal sustainability and field longevity.
- Well & Subsurface Thermal Optimization
- Translate thermal models into expected per-well thermal output profiles.
- Define expected temperature behavior across well clusters.
- Optimize well placement to maximize heat flow efficiency and minimize thermal interference.
- Integrate well and logging data to update thermal performance predictions in real time.
- Surface Power Plant Integration
- Work closely with surface engineering and power plant teams to align:
- Thermal energy delivery rates
- Working fluid circulation strategies
- Fluid rate strategies for thermal sustainability and field management
- Ensure subsurface heat extraction strategy is fully synchronized with power generation requirements.
- Real-Time Data Integration & Learning Loop
- Incorporate well data, temperature logs, and early flow/production measurements into thermal models.
- Continuously update field development assumptions during development campaigns.
- Build iterative feedback loops between:
- Well(s) execution
- Thermal model updates
- Well performance evaluation
- Field expansion planning
- Cross-Functional Technical Integration
- Serve as the technical bridge between geoscience, well engineering, and power plant operations teams.
- Support decision-making on field scale-up timing, well sequencing, and pad deployment strategy.
- Provide clear, model-driven insights for leadership on field performance and expansion scenarios.
Qualifications
- PhD (preferred) or Master’s degree in Geothermal Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Geoscience, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline
- Strong background in subsurface modeling and numerical simulation
- Experience with heat transfer, geothermal systems, or subsurface energy systems
- Familiarity with thermal modeling, reservoir analogs, or coupled geomechanics/thermal systems
- Experience integrating subsurface models with surface energy systems (power plants preferred)
- Ability to work in fast-moving, data-evolving field development environments

Responsibilities
- Responsibilities will be aligned to candidate’s experience and may include:
- Strategic Planning and Execution: Collaborate with Management Team to develop and execute initiatives that unlock growth, margin, or operational efficiencies.
- Financial Modeling: Perform technoeconomic analysis, model business plans and project financial structures, refine and track performance metrics.

Position Overview:
XGS Energy is seeking a mid-career Operational Geologist to support drilling and subsurface characterization activities for geothermal development projects. The role will focus on real-time geological interpretation, wellsite operations, and integration of geological, petrophysical, and drilling data to support safe and efficient well execution.
Responsibilities
Wellsite Geological Operations
- Provide real-time geological supervision during drilling operations, ensuring accurate formation identification and stratigraphic interpretation.
- Monitor and interpret cuttings, drilling parameters, and mud logging data to evaluate formation changes and subsurface conditions.
- Maintain close collaboration with drilling engineers, mud loggers, and directional drilling teams to support operational decision-making.
- Identify and document lithological transitions, fractures, alteration zones, and structural features relevant to geothermal resource characterization.
Mud Logging and Geological Data Acquisition
- Oversee mud logging services and ensure high-quality geological data acquisition.
- Interpret cuttings descriptions, and drilling parameters to support subsurface interpretation.
- Ensure proper sampling procedures and quality control for cuttings and geological samples.
Subsurface Characterization
- Integrate wellsite observations with geophysical, geological, and petrophysical data to refine subsurface models.
- Assist with formation evaluation and petrophysical interpretation where applicable.
- Support core acquisition programs, sample preservation, and preliminary geological descriptions.
Reporting and Data Integration
- Prepare daily geological reports and end-of-well summaries.
- Document key geological observations including stratigraphy, structural features, fracture density, and alteration patterns.
- Contribute to post-well geological interpretation and subsurface model updates.
- Safety and Operational Excellence
- Maintain strong adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards during wellsite operations.
- Support operational planning by providing geological input for well prognosis, coring programs, and logging runs.
Required Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. in Geology, Geological Engineering, or related Earth Sciences field
- 10–15 years of operational geology experience
- Extensive experience in wellsite geology and mud logging interpretation
- Proven experience supporting drilling operations in high-temperature wells, geothermal wells, or deep/high-temperature hydrocarbon environments
- Strong understanding of drilling operations and formation evaluation
- Strong operational awareness and decision-making
- Ability to work effectively in wellsite and remote field environments
- Strong integration skills across geology, drilling, and reservoir disciplines
- Clear and concise technical communication and reporting
Preferred Qualification
- Experience working on geothermal drilling programs
- Familiarity with high-temperature drilling environments
- Petrophysical interpretation experience (logs, formation evaluation)
